Literature Update
August 2016

The Academy provides this regular e-update to raise awareness of current research in orthotics and prosthetics published outside of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO).

The list below is the result of a search for articles including the terms "orthotic devices" and "artificial limbs" indexed April – July 2016. Where available, links to freely accessible full text versions of the article are provided. Where only a link to the abstract is provided, the full article may be available for purchase. Results have not been edited for style but have been sorted for clinical relevance.

Knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) can be used to treat individuals with many different pathologies, including neuromuscular disease (NMD) and central nervous system (CNS) conditions. Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of orthotic devices, patient perceptions, the type of prescribed orthotic devices, and costs linked with these devices. A qualitative study, with 24 participants, was conducted to assess patient perspectives. Patients reported that decreasing pain and falls and improving stability were the most important to them. A systematic review of 21 studies was conducted to assess the types of orthotic devices prescribed for these conditions, which was typically a KAFO. Finally, a survey was completed to assess the costs associated with orthotic device prescriptions. In all, 238 healthcare professionals responded, reporting a wide range of costs. The results showed that there are many orthotic treatments used for NMD and CNS, but the effectiveness of such devices is unknown in the current literature. This is especially true regarding the outcomes that are of more consequence to the patients. The researchers proposed future work looking at a core set of outcome measures that can be used to better determine the effectiveness of such devices both in a functional setting and in terms of patient-desired outcomes.
