This regular e-update is provided by the Academy to raise awareness of current research in orthotics and prosthetics published outside of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO).

The list below is the result of a search for articles including the terms "orthotic devices" or "artificial limbs" indexed January – March 2012.
Where available, links to freely accessible full text versions of the article are provided. Where a link to the abstract only is provided, the full article may be available for purchase. Results were edited for clinical relevance.

The feature article was presented at the recent Academy Annual Meeting & Scientific Symposium in Atlanta by Kate Allyn, CPO. The article, published in Prosthetics Orthotics International, investigates the relationship of sock ply to sock thickness. The study tested seven sock materials of varying ply and sheaths. Using a custom device, sock thickness under eight different compressive stress conditions and two different biaxial in-plane tensile strain conditions were measured. The results of the study found that single ply sock thickness did not equal one-third the thickness of a three ply sock of the same material. The study also found that socks woven from one material are much more consistent in thickness when donned and compressed, biaxial in-plane tensile strain and compression applied, compared to socks woven from multiple materials. Sheath thickness, under walking conditions, were found to more easily relate to volume management. For the average residual limb the addition of one sheath equates to approximately one percent loss in volume.
